Storyline

It had been more than one week that Sophie was staying at the equestrian center. She could already sit on a horse more or less steadily and was even trying to trot without Lara holding her on the lunge. A couple more weeks and she could choose a discipline. Lucie made Andreas to tell Sophie more about show jumping and all of its pleasures, as Lucie was a jumping rider herself. Andreas accomplished that mission and was even working out when Sophie was at the arenas, but Jazz, who still wasn’t over the fact that her boyfriend was trying to help the young lady by any means, quickly interrupted this idea.

Sophie was taken as well to take a look at the dressage training. Lucie didn’t feel brave enough to take her to Jazz’s training so to prevent those two from meeting each other too often. So, Sophie was watching Quentin working out, who at the end of the session was almost in the condition of hysteria, as he couldn’t manage to do a pirouette properly. One day Sophie was given a bicycle, so Lara took the girl with her to look at some cross-country work out. It had been raining the previous day, so both girls and the horse came back dirty and soaking wet. It was habitually for Lara, while Sophie occupied the shower for quite a long time. It was clear that the chances she would choose x-country were too weak. Anyway, it was too early for her to think about the discipline until she can do the galloping.

Sophie still hadn’t developed love for horse riding and horses as well. She was just doing what she was told. Without any enthusiasm or desire. And she wasn’t hiding her dissatisfaction, openly announcing that she didn’t need all of that. Such statements were straining the others, as all seven of them had been in love with this business since early childhood and seeing the person who had no interest in this and, moreover, freely riding Mrs. Monet’s horse, with free equipment, was turning them mad. Some didn’t even make the attempts to make friends with Sophie. For example, Jazz and Max. And if Max was just simply ignoring her, Jazz was doing everything to attack the girl somehow. Quentin, Lara, Lucie, Alex and Andreas were at least trying to help Sophie and to make friend with her. The best at this hard affair was the most patient girl at the stables – Lucie, who was listening to all of Sophie’s complaints without showing any irritation or negativity.

By the end of the week everyone got a little bit less busy, so as soon as there was a spare minute, each of them was hiding from the sun in the house or simply somewhere in shade. The terrace of the boarding house was exactly one of those places. There, some residents were loving to spend their free time, chatting or just smoking. The most frequent visitors of this place were Lara, Max and Andreas – ones of the “oldest” Mrs. Monet’s students living there. Not taking Lucie into account, of course, who was lucky enough to live there from her very childhood.

And that was it now, when the trinity crawled out on the terrace after lunch. That was the ideal time: horses and staff were having their break, no one was working out on the small outside arena, which was located right in front of the house. Those three could always be seen there at this time – and no one else. By some unknown reason they never let anyone to their “closed” conversations, and if someone else was coming to the terrace, they were immediately leaving. No one, except them, knew what were they talking about every time and why they didn’t want to let anyone join. Even Jazz, Andreas’ girlfriend wasn’t honored to join, although she made some scandals over it but after some failed attempts she let it go.

For some days in a row already Sophie was watching those three, trying to understand why they were so secret. With every new day she was trying to crawl a little bit closer to them to overhear their conversations, but she never managed to do it secretly. And that day it was all the same: all of others went to their rooms, and our trinity went to the terrace. And Sophie decided to stay in the living room in the armchair, which was standing right at the window looking on the terrace. The girl quietly sat there, taking a magazine and preparing headphones, just in case one of them decides to enter the house. Then she started overhearing their talk.

“Oh gahd Max, I’m telling you – a couple more days and I’m off to drinking”, whined Lara.

“And you’ve turned out to be more enduring, then we’ve thought”, both guys laughed, pronouncing those words almost at the same time.

“Yeah, but you’re joining me, right?”

“Well for me it’s surely yup”, enigmatically said Max. Sophie even started to think if there were something going on between them. That was too much of flirting that they did.

“Can’t say anything about me”, Andreas signed, “Jazz can go nuts”

“Yeah yeah yeah, mummy Jazz won’t let you go drink out with your friends”, Max laughed, and, according to the noises that followed, one of the guys pretentiously punched the other.

“Ah, that reminds me of my school time”, demurely signed Lara.

Sophie, while listening to all of this, still couldn’t understand all that secrecy. There was nothing to call it but just an ordinary friends’ talk.

Suddenly someone’s hand touched her shoulder. That was Lucie, who, according to her wet hair, was just from the shower. By gesture, she showed Sophie to follow her, after what she moved to the kitchen. As soon as Sophie reached the kitchen, Lucie looked out to make sure there was no one around, after what she started the conversation in a low voice.

“They knew you were there”

“What?” Sophie tried to do the confused expression but saying by the look on Lucie’s face it was a waste of time.

“You know what. Why do you need overhearing them? Moreover, if they don’t want it. And so, they knew you were there and they weren’t speaking on ‘their’ topics”

“’Their’ topics?” interested Sophie.

“How do I know? That’s why those are ‘their’ topics which only they know”, resented Lucie, “Well, I dunno, they are now ones of the oldest residents, they know most about people in here and all that stuff…”

“But you too, you’re in here like since your very birth”, Sophie still couldn’t get it, “Why aren’t you there?”

“We didn’t communicate much at the beginning, and it just didn’t work at all. Now yes, we’re friends, but they aren’t letting me in their secrets”, Lucie shrugged her shoulders and looked at the clock, “Ok, I’ gotta go. And you, find something more interesting than overhearing other people’s talks, alrights?”

With those words Lucie left, leaving Sophie in the kitchen in proud loneliness.
